About Us Cogito ergo sum - I think, therefore I am.
Cogito Jiu-Jitsu is a martial arts school focused on providing a friendly training environment with classes for beginners as well as seasoned martial arts practitioners. The students in our school come in with a willingness to learn, not just strength and athleticism. We emphasize the technical aspects of martial arts and respect the tradition of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. With classes throughout the day on over 1100 square feet of mat space and private lessons available, we hope you find a home in our school and become part of the Cogito family. “...first, one must be a good person. Be a friend at the academy, learn to help. To be good at Jiu-Jitsu, it’s all about believing and training, there isn’t that much else you can do.” – Rodolfo Vieira |
What is Jiu-Jitsu? |
Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art begun by the Gracie family, modified from Japanese Judo and Jujutsu. While we believe Jiu-Jitsu is meant for every person at every age, it is notable to know that one of the most famous founders and practitioners, Helio Gracie, was very small in stature. He adjusted the techniques to be advantageous to his smaller size, thereby making Jiu-Jitsu a martial art that does not necessarily favor the larger person. The focus is to control the opponent in a way to make them submit. Leverage, grips, and position are used to gain power. Jiu-Jitsu is primarily a ground game (unlike many martial arts), making it an excellent defensive martial art.

Why learn martial arts? |
-"The biggest lesson I learnt from Jiu-Jitsu was how to truly know myself." – Carlos Gracie
Martial arts are not about being able to attack, submit, or better an opponent. At its core, it is about knowing yourself, understanding your limits, and understanding your strengths. Being a practitioner of the martial arts shapes your mind, improving your self-control, confidence, awareness, and patience. Physically, you'll see improvements in your stamina and overall health. If you train consistently and nourish your body appropriately, you'll see a decrease in fat and increase in muscle. |
